The Vineyards of England and Wales

There are nearly 400 commercial vineyards in England and Wales covering approximately 2000 acres of land in total. Nearly all are in the southern half of England and Wales. Most English and Welsh vineyards are small (less than 5 acres), many very small (less than 1 acre). Only a small number exceed 25 acres and just a handful 50 acres. The largest (Denbies, Dorking, Surrey) has around 200 acres of vines under cultivation.

The following listings of English and Welsh vineyards give contact and, in some cases, opening details. You can select vineyards from the counties index or just scroll down to see the full list.

It is always wise to telephone first to check that a vineyard will actually be open when you wish to visit - some only accept visitors by such prior arrangement. Nearly all vineyards give tastings of their wines - some charge for a vineyard tour and tastings. Where there are special facilities or attractions these are indicated. Some vineyards have their own detailed websites and in some cases links are to them are shown.

Cave Vineyards (Private/Non-commercial)

(CAVE = Claydon Association of Vineyard Eccentrics)

In 1997 twenty six families cleared some abandoned allotments on the edge of Botolph Claydon and planted 200 vines of Rondo and Seyval Blanc. A small trial was carried out in 1999 by allowing selected vines to fruit and making our own wine under cottage industry conditions.

The white wine was crisp with a hint of Lavender. The Rondo (which is a cross of Pinot noir and St. Laurent) produced a really deep red wine. This was most members' favourite. Whilst both wines were "very drinkable" it was decided that our wines would benefit from processing by a specialist winery.

Our first full harvest in October 2000 reflected a poor summer and the effects of Powdery Mildew, particularly on the Rondo. Nevertheless we are expecting around 300 bottles and, in view of the minimum quantity required by the winery for pressing, we have decided to blend our grapes to produce a rosé. Tasting and distribution of the yield will take place in the summer, probably at our annual Vineyard Picnic.

"Picture acres of neat vines laden with many varieties of plump grapes; Gamay, Ortega, Wurzer and the classic Champagne varieties : Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. They ripen in the warm sun and thrive in the loamy, well-drained soil before being harvested and turned into wine in the start-of-the-art and on-site winery. You're probably thinking of a vineyard in France, or Australia. But no, this is Stanlake Park Wine Estate just outside Twyford in Berkshire, and it is leading the way in English wine production." Visitor comments: The Fume Blanc is very very good and they had a Pink Sparkling, which we intended to get some more of, till the Sunday Times Wine Club bought the remainder..... Wylye Valley Vineyard

Crockerton, Warminster, Wiltshire

Recommendor's comments: Vineyard looks like a scaled down version of Provence. There's not a lot going on - no cafe, no restaurant, no farm shop.... - the owner has simply stuck to what he's good at and more than ever this makes it worth the visit to taste the wine in a civilised barn with civilised company without being confronted by rows of "Grandma Rosie's Jam" and "Cream Teas £3.50". Recommended - Coachman (Dry) - Light, slightly (but not overly) sharp and apple-y, dry with a sour lemon finish - much nicer than my description sounds! A very good antidote to the overly-fat bloating Chardonnays and Semillons currently occupying the supermarket shelves from the "New World." Paul Mitchell
